Course Description:


Dr. James Demetrious will present a 10-hour postgraduate education course pertaining to the Differential Diagnosis of Neuromuscular Conditions in the chiropractic setting. Relevant learning opportunities will be presented utilizing actual clinical case presentations. Careful review of current evidence-based practices and appropriateness criteria will be combined with clinically intuitive rationales.


Interactive discussion will be afforded that includes salient historic assessments, vetted examination procedures, clinical reasoning, laboratory and imaging appropriateness criteria, differential diagnosis and therapeutic decision making. Emphasis will be placed upon risk management and improving clinical outcomes.


Dr. Demetrious will employ active learning strategies to accommodate the different learning styles of respective postgraduate students.

Expected Learning Outcomes: 


1.      Attendees will receive a nuanced review of:

a.       eliciting a careful medical history,

b.      advanced perspectives for yellow and red flag diagnostic issues,

c.       performing a thorough examination that is mindful of test specificity and sensitivities,

d.      utilizing established appropriateness criteria and meaningfulness of advanced diagnostic testing based upon systematic reviews and available guidelines,

e.       differential diagnostic impressions of common and important clinical entities,

f.        establishing reasonable care parameters and recommendations based upon available literature and guidelines.

2.      Attendees will receive reviews of actual clinical cases that focus on common and important regional issues.

3.      Attendees will be presented therapeutic selection criteria with discussions of clinical approaches of the chiropractic practitioner and other established ancillary providers.

4.      Careful review will be provided pertaining to documentation and risk management.


Hourly Breakdown: (10 hours)


  • Hours 1-2: Introduction and Trauma/injury
  • Hours 3-4: Biologic concepts of connective tissue, Connective tissue matrices and Myositis/myopathies
  • Hours 5-6: Tendinitis/tendinopathy/enthesopathies, Capsulitis
  • Hour 7-8: Discogenic issues/discitis and Radiculitis/neuritis/myelitis
  • Hour 9-10: Spine/trunk, Upper extremities and Lower extremities
  • Conclusion



About the Speaker: 

Dr. James Demetrious is a nationally distinguished chiropractic orthopedist, educator, author and editor. He has published many peer-reviewed journal papers related to advanced differential diagnosis. He currently serves as an editor on behalf of the Journal of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists. He is an editorial reviewer on behalf of the journals Spine, Annals of Internal Medicine and Clinical Anatomy. Dr. Demetrious is a member of the NCMIC Speakers’ Bureau and provides postgraduate coursework throughout the United States. He has continually cared for patients over the past 32 years.
