The Governor’s Cabinet Opiate Action Team (GCOAT) was established in the fall of 2011 to address the continuing epidemic of misuse and abuse and overdose from prescription opioids. The GCOAT consists of five working groups:(1) Treatment--includes Medication Assisted Treatment; (2) Professional Education; (3) Public Education; (4) Enforcement; and (5) Recovery Supports.

Under the leadership of Dept. of Health Director Dr. Ted Wymyslo and Department of Aging Director Bonnie Kantor-Burman, the Opioids and other Controlled Substances guidelines were developed so that drug-seekers would not be able to shop from one location to another until finding a physician willing to prescribe opiate painkillers. This was done through a multidisciplinary effort involving many state medical and health care associations, emergency departments and acute care facilities, state agencies and boards, as well as individual physicians, nurses and other clinicians.

Last fall the Ohio State Chiropractic Association was appointed to the Opiates and Other Controlled Substances Committee to offer their professional insight as to how to tackle the addiction problem in Ohio. The OSCA's President, Dr. Kreg Huffer, is the OSCA's representative to the committee.  Below, you will find meeting updates on the progress this important committee has made since its inception last year.  Should you have any questions please feel free to contact Nicholas Strata at nicholas@oscachiro.org.

OOCS Subcommittee Moving In The Right Direction

Dr. Huffer, President of the OSCA and representative to the OOCS, recently attended a subcommittee meeting titled Opiate Patient Education and Engagement and Medical Guidance Subcommittee.  Dr. Huffer’s presence on this committee continues to educate healthcare professionals on the need to educate Ohioans about the causes of pain and not just the management of pain.  Both he and the chairwoman of the subcommittee feel good about the direction of the committee.

The full committee is scheduled to meet next on April 6th.

Chiropractic Added As Non-pharmaceutical Treatment Option At OOCS Meeting

Recently, the OSCA attended an Opiates and Other Controlled Substances Committee at the Ohio Department of Medicaid.  This meeting resulted in the practice of chiropractic being added as a non-pharmaceutical treatment option for pain management.  Additionally, this committee agreed on the creation of information graphs to be distributed to the appropriate healthcare providers to educate them on the treatment and conditions non-pharmaceutical treatments paths are good for.

The next full OOCS meeting will be April 6th, 2015.

OSCA’s Opiate Committee Representatives Assigned to Subcommittees

Last Monday at the Opiates and Other Controlled Substances Committee Dr. Huffer and Bharon Hoag were appointed to subcommittees that will focus on different topics on behalf of the full committee.  Dr. Huffer was appointed to the Messaging Subcommittee.  This committee will focus on how to educate both providers and the general public on the new direction the state is taking.  Bharon Hoag was assigned to the Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Pain Subcommittee.  It’s the committees purpose to create a list of appropriate non-pharmacological treatments for pain and then create training materials to help providers chose these treatments first.

The next OOCS’s next meeting is scheduled for April 6th, 2015.
